Mission
Our mission is to improve the quality of life for dogs by teaching them the skills they need to adapt to life in the world of people. We are also dedicated to improving pet-owners' enjoyment of their pets by educating them about pet-ownership responsibility and by helping them understand their dog's behavior.
Dog Training at Westlake Canine Academy
Westlake Canine Academy provides dog training services with an emphasis on positive training and owner education. We do this through our science based, results-oriented SAFE Training for Dogs® program, which is offered through private or semi-private lessons. We also offer puppy classes and a doggy day-school program with our sister company, the Bed & Biscuit boarding kennel and daycare facility.
We believe that every dog is different and every dog owner has different training goals and concerns. Westlake Canine Academy places an emphasis on personalized service and accomplishing your individual training goals. We are able to do this because we make a commitment to your success and by offering only private and small-group (semi-private) lessons.
Whether you want to teach your dog good manners, correct or prevent bad habits, or just want to enjoy a great relationship with your dog, the trainers at Westlake Canine Academy will help you achieve your personal training goals!
Facility
Our classes are held in our private indoor training room or in our outdoor, lighted training field, which provides a spacious and comfortable environment for training.

The SAFE Training for Dogs Program: More Than Just
"Basic Obedience"
Westlake Canine Academy teaches the SAFE Training for Dogs curriculum, which is a positive, people-centered companion (pet) dog training program. We do this because we know that people-centered training, where we train you to train your dog, produces longer-lasting, more reliable results and strengthens the bond between owner and pet.
SAFE Training has been helping people successfully train their dogs for almost 25 years. SAFE Training is much more than "basic obedience training". Using the SAFE Training Method, we will teach you to better communicate with your dog and better motivate your dog. We will also show you how to be a better leader by teaching you the "Four 'Cs' of Good Leadership". SAFE Training is designed to help you correct or prevent common problem-behaviors like leash-pulling, jumping up, excessive barking and many others. In our SAFE I Introductory class you'll learn the 10 Basic SAFE Skills:
- Leash Control
- Name Response
- Sit
- Down
- Come
- Stay
- Leave-it
- Loose Leash Walking
- Waiting at Doors
- Bonus Skill (Customized to your goals - or a fun trick)
Our Promise to You - Success Through Personalized Attention
We are always amazed by how many clients come to us after already having completed a professional dog training program - and walked away with virtually no useful skills. We believe that no pet owner should ever have to say "my dog failed obedience school". In our view, when a pet owner or dog does not retain what is taught, it is usually a failure on the part of the trainer. At Westlake Canine Academy, we want to be the last dog trainers you ever need.
We believe that our success depends on your success - and we stand behind that. Our promise is that if, after taking our eight-week SAFE I Introductory class, you do not know at least nine out of the ten Basic SAFE Skills, we will continue to work with you for up to a full additional eight weeks - whatever it takes to achieve success. We will do this at no additional charge. Of course we ask our clients to do their part - to follow the instructions of their trainer and to consistently practice. We teach our clients that they are responsible for the behavior of their dogs - however, we are responsible for giving them the tools they need to succeed.
One of the ways we are able to keep our promise is by offering only private and semi-private lessons. Often, in large group classes, individual training goals can get lost in the shuffle, and specific concerns or difficulties go un-addressed. This is why we have made the decision to offer only private or semi-private classes, where you will receive the trainer's full attention, or share it with no more than two other clients, in the case of semi-private lessons.
Weekly Client Review
Every week, our training staff meets to discuss the progress of every one of our clients. If a client is having difficulty, we collectively problem-solve and offer suggestions to the training instructor. The program is overseen by Elizabeth Givens, CPDT-KA, who is an animal behavior consultant and has been training dogs for almost 25 years and trainers have the benefit of her expertise as well.
